Bill Bennett has an excellent article in NRO today about how the Democratic party has completely lost its ethical moorings. If there is anything that is going to gut the party long term, it is the Dems willingness to bend or twist any law in pursuit of power. When the party refused to oust Clinton in 1998, it set the groundwork for all the sleaze you are seeing now. So long as the Clintons continue to dominate the party, I believe the Dems are doomed to permanent minority status.
That is not something I welcome. So long as the Democrats compete using sleaze and backhanded tactics(as they are doing now) instead of competing in the marketplace of ideas, it is bad for the country. We need an opposition that will engage in a debate over policy, because without that, we don't have a sanity check on the correctness of a policy, and that won't work unless the Dems have a competing vision that is based on policy, and not just winning the election. Reagan understood that. Bush41 didn't, and was ejected from the presidency. Gingrich understood it, but I don't think any Democrat has understood that since McGovern back in '72.
I also learned something else I didn't know in the article, that Bill Bennet was a Democrat until 1986.
